At Tieri State School, we have 2 School Captains and 3 House Captains.

Our process for choosing leadership positions:

  • Leadership definitions and expectations are communicated to Year 5 at the start of the year.
  • Students who display leadership qualities/ behaviours are nominated as STAR students.
  • In Term 4, Year 5 STAR students are invited to apply for leadership.
  • Staff and students vote to choose leaders. Vote is for leadership, not a specific position.
  • Leadership positions are allocated following moderation of a panel with consideration of the combination of the following criteria:
1. Everyday Elements
  • STAR Student awards
  • Student of the Week awards
  • Positive behaviour records
  • Attendance (+90% - with consideration given to illness/ emergent reasons)
  • Major/ minor behaviour incidents (<3)
2. Process Elements
  • Apply for a leadership position
  • Write 2 paragraphs about leadership
  • Participate in a panel discussion
  • Prepare a speech
3. Collaboration Elements
  • Student vote and staff vote
  • Anecdotal evidence of leadership across the year (provided by staff consultation)
  • Suitability of a candidate for either School Captain or House Captain based on capabilities for the role. (provided by staff consultation)
During the leadership process:
  • A student may choose to change the sporting house they represent
  • Fewer leadership positions may be allocated if suitable leaders are not identified or if insufficient applications are received.
